Straw slides

Slide up and down through a straw or on a lip trill.

How to do it
  1. Hum through a drinking straw, or blow a lip trill like a motorboat (“brrr”).
  2. Slide from a low note up to a high note and back down, like a slow siren.
  3. Keep it quiet and easy. Do 3 slides.

What it should feel like: A light buzz at your lips, and nothing squeezing in your throat.

Why this helps

Partly closing your mouth with a straw or a lip trill changes the air pressure above your vocal folds in a way that helps them vibrate easily (Titze 2006). ASHA lists these semi-occluded vocal tract exercises for gender-affirming voice work.
