Explore your “ee”

Watch your resonance move live.

How to do it
  1. Hold “ee” at a comfortable speaking pitch.
  2. Try brightening it (smile, tongue forward) and darkening it (roomier inside) and watch the needle move.
  3. Cover as much of the scale as feels easy.

What it should feel like: Small changes in mouth shape moving the needle.

Why this helps

Resonance depends on the size and shape of the space above your vocal folds. Spreading your lips shortens that space and bringing your tongue forward makes its front part smaller, which raises the formants; rounding your lips or lowering your larynx lengthens it and lowers them. ASHA lists vowel modification and formant shifting as resonance techniques. The meter uses the same measurement as your held “ee”, updated live, so treat it as a guide.
